Etalon Engineering
Marketing data engineering that stays accurate inside the rules.
Etalon Spectra shows what must stop. Etalon engineers rebuild the tracking you're allowed to keep across GTM, GA4, advertising platforms, server-side infrastructure, and reporting—so privacy enforcement does not leave your team with data it cannot trust.

01 / The handoff
Spectra finds the gap. Engineering rebuilds the system around it.
Stopping a non-permitted tag is only the first step. The change can alter attribution, conversion counts, audiences, and reporting. Etalon engineers trace those dependencies, rebuild the permitted events, and validate the result across the stack.
- 01
Observe
Spectra records what fires before and after opt-out.
- 02
Enforce
Etalon Opt-Out Mode applies the supported behavior in GTM.
- 03
Rebuild
Engineering restores reliable measurement on the tracking you're allowed to keep.
- 04
Validate
QA tests the corrected behavior and documents the result.
The scanner is the evidence. Engineering is the change to the stack.
02 / One architecture
Build the measurement layer as one system.
Consent signals, event definitions, tag logic, delivery routes, platform conversions, warehouse tables, and reporting depend on one another. Etalon engineers them together.
- 01
Control plane
Privacy control plane
Etalon does not replace your CMP. It makes the the visitor's choice operative in the tracking stack.
- CMP and applicable privacy-signal integration
- Consent Mode and Etalon Opt-Out Mode coexistence
- Tag suppression, restriction, transformation, and routing rules
- Documented fallback behavior
- 02
Event contract
Measurement foundation
- Data-layer design and event taxonomy
- GA4 events, parameters, and key-event mapping
- Google Ads, Meta, and LinkedIn conversion mapping
- Forms, calls, iframe interactions, cross-domain journeys, and ecommerce events where applicable
- Browser/server deduplication and source reconciliation
- 03
Destination governance
Delivery and activation
- Client-side Google Tag Manager as a complete implementation path
- Server-side GTM, first-party endpoints, and conversion APIs when justified
- Payload filtering, transformation, routing, and destination governance
- BigQuery or other approved downstream delivery where it is part of the architecture
- 04
Downstream outputs
Data and reporting
Dashboards are downstream outputs. Etalon fixes the measurement foundation before designing the view.
- BigQuery measurement datasets and source harmonization when in scope
- QA reconciliation between source events and destination platforms
- Looker Studio decision views when reporting is part of the engagement
- Documented metric definitions and ownership
03 / Conversion measurement
Every conversion needs a defined path and a testable result.
Etalon maps each business action from the interface event to the analytics and advertising platforms like Google Ads and Meta that are permitted to receive it. Then we test the handoff at every layer.
generate_lead| Checkpoint | Defined behavior / evidence | Example status |
|---|---|---|
| 01 Source interaction | Successful form submission confirmed | PASS / confirmed |
| 02 Data-layer event | event: generate_leadevent_id: lead_example_001 | PASS / contract |
| 03 GTM rule | Success event matched; repeated clicks excluded | PASS / matched |
| 04 Privacy condition | Configured condition permits this event and destination | PASS / permitted |
| 05 GA4 receipt | generate_lead received; key-event mapping checked | PASS / received |
| 06 Advertising-platform mapping | Agreed conversion action matched; destination condition checked | PASS / mapped |
| 07 Deduplication | Shared event identity checked where browser/server delivery applies | PASS / one event |
- Measurement plans, event contracts, parameters, and naming rules
- GA4 and advertising-platform conversion configuration
- Calls, forms, iframe interactions, cross-domain journeys, and ecommerce events
- Browser/server deduplication and conversion API mapping
- Debugging, browser/device QA, and destination-platform validation
- Documentation of events, triggers, parameters, consent conditions, and owners
04 / Server-side decisions
Server-side is an extension—not a default.
Server-side GTM can centralize routing, transformations, deduplication, and platform APIs. It does not create consent, make a site compliant, or belong in every stack. Etalon recommends it only when the architecture and operating model justify it.
Start with client-side GTM when:
- The privacy decision can be applied before the tag sends data
- The destination set and transformation requirements are straightforward
- A smaller operating footprint is the better system design
Add a server-side extension when:
- Conversion APIs or a controlled first-party endpoint are required
- Payload filtering, transformation, or deduplication should be centralized
- Multiple domains or platforms like Google Ads and Meta need a governed routing layer
- The organization can own the hosting and monitoring model, or scopes Etalon to support it
The architecture decides. The trend does not.
05 / Build and migration
Change the architecture without losing the baseline.
Etalon stages changes against a documented current state, validates the new path, and hands over an architecture your team can operate.
- 01

06 / Ongoing engineering
Keep measurement reliable as the stack changes.
New pages, campaign tags, CMP updates, vendor releases, and product changes can reintroduce drift. Etalon can stay involved as the engineering owner or as a review layer for your internal team.
- Release and regression QA
- Tracking-incident diagnosis
- Container and event-schema change control
- Scheduled health reviews and anomaly investigation
- Documentation maintenance and technical handoff
- Coordination with marketing, development, privacy, data, and agency teams

08 / Engineering FAQ
Engineering FAQ
What is the difference between Etalon Spectra and Etalon Engineering?
Etalon Spectra observes and reports tracking behavior. Etalon Engineering changes the implementation. Etalon Opt-Out Mode is the GTM enforcement framework used in supported environments, and QA verifies the resulting behavior.
Does an engineering engagement need to start with an Etalon Spectra scan?
For opt-out remediation, a Spectra scan is the preferred starting point because it provides an observed baseline. Broader architecture and migration work can begin with technical discovery, with Spectra used wherever privacy behavior must be validated.
Do we need server-side GTM?
No. Client-side GTM is a complete implementation path. Etalon adds server-side infrastructure only when conversion APIs, first-party endpoints, centralized transformation, deduplication, or routing requirements justify the added operating model.
Does Etalon replace our CMP or cookie banner?
No. Your CMP records the visitor’s choice. Etalon integrates that signal with the tracking stack, applies supported enforcement behavior, and verifies what happens next.
Can Google Consent Mode and Etalon Opt-Out Mode coexist?
Yes. They have related but different responsibilities. Etalon maps the signals and tag behavior to the supported architecture, then tests the combined configuration.
Can Etalon work with our internal team or agency?
Yes. Etalon can own the full engineering scope or take responsibility for architecture, difficult implementation work, review, QA, and documentation alongside an existing team.
Does Etalon build Looker Studio dashboards?
When reporting is part of the agreed scope, Etalon can build decision views in Looker Studio. The source measurement and metric definitions are stabilized first.
Does Etalon manage advertising campaigns?
No. Etalon engineers the measurement infrastructure that analytics and advertising platforms depend on. Campaign strategy and media management remain with the customer or its agency.
What determines the scope of an engineering engagement?
Scope depends on containers, domains, tags and vendors, CMP configuration, server-side architecture, reporting requirements, and existing technical debt.
